Rise to Lead — Developing Future Leaders: A Leadership Journey at BIGM

Alhamdulillah, Mashallah. I have successfully completed an unforgettable leadership journey through the “Rise to Lead — Developing Future Leaders” program at the Bangladesh Institute of Governance and Management (BIGM).

As a doctor, most of my professional journey has naturally been centred around healthcare. This program gave me an important opportunity to step beyond that familiar environment and learn alongside professionals from different government cadres, the private sector and development organizations.

The diversity of the participants became one of the greatest strengths of the training. We were able to discuss challenges from different professional perspectives and learn how leadership requires collaboration across sectors.

Earlier, I had the opportunity to participate in the WEO Emerging Stars global leadership program. That experience introduced me to leadership practices in an international context. The BIGM program provided another valuable perspective by connecting leadership principles with the systems, institutions and realities of Bangladesh.

I strongly believe that leadership development is highly relevant for doctors and healthcare professionals. Leadership is not limited to policymaking or holding an administrative position. It also involves communication, systems thinking, emotional intelligence, negotiation, teamwork and collective problem-solving.

These skills can help healthcare professionals contribute more effectively to improving healthcare delivery and serving patients and society.

Beyond the formal learning, I also take away a valuable professional network — a community of people from different sectors connected by a shared commitment to contribute to Bangladesh.

My heartfelt appreciation goes to BIGM for organizing this leadership development program, to all respected resource persons for sharing their knowledge and experience, and to my fellow participants for the discussions, collaboration and memorable journey.
